A Guide to Snorkeling in Fiji

Posted by Unleashed Travel in News

Fiji has so much to offer visitors. Not only is it beautiful, with white sandy beaches, lagoons and crystal blue waters, but there is also another world to explore just below the surface. Fiji is simply teeming with aquatic life, and that’s why a trip to this island paradise wouldn’t be complete without some serious snorkeling.

Known as the soft coral capital of the world, Fiji is home to over 400 species of coral. While staying in Fiji, there’s no doubt you’ll encounter some incredible sights as you snorkel over the reefs. Some of the most famous reefs of this nation include the Great Astrolabe Reef, the Rainbow Reef and the glowing Great White Wall.

The aquatic life you may encounter while snorkeling include sea turtles, starfish, manta rays, eels, octopus and sharks, not to mention the many species of tropical, colourful fish.

If you are not wearing flippers (in some areas it’s best not to), make sure you have a pair of reef shoes on to protect your feet from sharp coral.

Taking a snorkeling tour is a great way to experience the best snorkeling spots near where you’re staying.

Snorkeling Tips

If this is your first time snorkeling, there are a few things that are good to know.

  • Before heading out to snorkel, test your equipment in shallow water. Use this time to get used to breathing through the snorkel.
  • If your snorkel fills with water, exhale sharply and this should expel the liquid out from the top.
  • If your mask has water in it, pull your head up out of the water and simply pull the mask away from your face so that the water drains out. To ensure this doesn’t continue to happen, make sure your mask is fitted properly to your face.
  • If you get tired, the best thing to do is float on your back and let yourself float for awhile with your head above water.
  • Salt can damage snorkeling gear. To keep your snorkeling equipment in good condition, soak it regularly in fresh water.

If you want to experience all that Fiji has to offer, you must add snorkeling to your holiday ‘to do’ list. An underwater camera would be wonderful here too, or even just a waterproof case for your smartphone.
